Screening: It is important to screen all children before possible treatment as we have to ensure that the selected children can be treated via trans-catheter procedure in the CathLab or via Cardiac Surgery. All children will be go through a medical examination program; basics such as gender, age, weight, general condition, blood samples, ECG and echocardiography. The screening is performed in presents of the parents so they can inform the medical team on the condition and behaviour of the child at home, in school, playing, sleeping, feeding, etc. The planned procedure will be discussed and explained. Parents need to give their consent

......in the eyes of the parents

Children suffering from heart defects “present at birth” need special care and attention, which creates fear and worrying aspects, especially when there is no help nearby. Many are constantly “out of breath”, have “blue cheeks, lips and fingernails” at any form of energy (crying, walking, playing, etc.) as they lack a sufficient oxygen level. They can suffer from infections (flu, colds, lung infections), have impaired growth as also eating requires energy. Children submitted to our screening program’s usually look inactive and empathic. One can see the stress, fear and worrying ‘in the eyes’ of the parents, but also ‘the hope’ of a good outcome.  By treating these children via heart catheterization and performing defect closure procedures or valve- and/or vessel balloon dilatation via trans-catheter procedures, or by open heart operations many of the symptoms can be improve offering the children and their family “peace of mind” and an improved Quality of Life
